Global aquaculture is growing rapidly, increasing the need for effective solutions against viral and bacterial diseases. One promising approach is the development of oral vaccines based on recombinant yeast.
In a W42 Industrial Biotechnology project, Komagataella phaffii (formerly Pichia pastoris) is used to produce a multivalent vaccine against two major viral fish pathogens. After fermentation, the yeast cells themselves become part of the feed — serving as production platform, vaccine carrier and natural immune booster.
With fermSYS VOC sensors and advanced data processing, fermentation processes can be monitored in real time, enabling intelligent control strategies for greater process stability and efficiency.
W42 and fermSYS invite Norwegian aquafeed producers, biotechnology companies and research institutions to explore the potential of this approach.
