Monitoring fermentation processes doesn’t have to be complicated. With the fermSYS Cube, you get a compact, all-in-one solution for measuring, controlling and analysing data from shake flask and laboratory fermentations.

The Cube combines all the necessary components in a single device – from the VOC sensor and control software to wireless communication.

All in one device

The fermSENSE Cube already contains all the components you need for process monitoring:

  • VOC sensor for online measurement of metabolic activity in exhaust air

  • fermHUB software for measurement, visualisation and control

  • Local ad hoc Wi-Fi for direct access without a network infrastructure

  • Wi-Fi connection for transmitting data to the central fermHUB PRO platform

This means you can get started straight away – without any additional hardware or local software installation.

Three steps to your first measurement with the fermSENSE - CUBE

1. Install the sensor:

Fit the cube to the exhaust vent of your shaking flask or laboratory fermenter.

2. Connect to the sensor:

Connect any device (a Wi-Fi-enabled laptop, tablet or smartphone) to the Cube via the local ad-hoc Wi-Fi network and open the Cube’s IP address in your web browser.

3. Start the measurement:

Start the online measurement and monitor the data for VOC-%, humidity and temperature data immediately.

The fermSENSE - Cube displays the measured VOC signals directly in the browser. This gives you immediate insights into metabolic activity, substrate consumption and the progress of the process.

Your benefits at a glance

  • All-in-one solution for measurement and control

  • No local software installation required

  • Browser-based access via PC, tablet or smartphone

  • Plug & Play for additional sensors and actuators

  • Local or cloud-based data storage

  • Ready to use in just a few minutes

Conclusion

With the fermSENSE - Cube, you get a ready-to-use solution for the online monitoring of fermentation processes. Installation, data collection and analysis are intuitive and require no additional infrastructure.

Plug in, connect, measure – fermentation monitoring really is that simple.

Further options

1. Calibration made simple - Factory calibrated - Application adaptable

Every CUBE sensor is supplied with a factory-adjusted two-point calibration, allowing reliable operation right from the start. The factory calibration parameters are displayed when the sensor is put into operation for the first time.

If required, the calibration can easily be adapted to the individual fermentation process via the two-point calibration

  • Users can define the zero and maximum reference points directly on site.

  • Within this calibrated range, the CUBE converts the sensor signal into a consistent VOC % reference value, enabling straightforward and reproducible fermentation monitoring.

2. Scale up to fermSYS – BUDDY

The CUBE does more than just monitor your process. By pairing it with the fermSYS  peristaltic pump, you upgrade your setup to a fully automated closed-loop feeding system (fermSYS – BUDDY).

Wireless & Cable-Free Integration

The BUDDY pump connects seamlessly via the CUBE’s integrated ad-hoc Wi-Fi network—no extra controllers, physical data cables, or external software required.

Smart Automated Feeding

Using real-time VOC trends and configurable PID logic, the CUBE automatically triggers and regulates the BUDDY pump based on actual metabolic demand. This prevents substrate depletion or overfeeding, keeping your culture in its optimal state.
